On June 15, 2022, Hanover Tavern hosted the 12th annual awards dinner for the Hanover Tavern Foundation Essay Contest. Each year, 6th grade students from Bell Creek Middle School write essays related to Margaret Wight’s Civil War diary, “A Refugee at Hanover Tavern”. The papers are judged by Hanover Tavern Foundation board members and community volunteers.
From 52 entries this year, the top 15 essayists were welcomed, along with their families, for a burger buffet and awards ceremony at Hanover Tavern’s E.J. Wade Coach House. All 15 students received a certificate, a Family Membership to the Hanover Tavern Foundation, and their own copy of “A Refugee at Hanover Tavern”. In addition, the top five students also received cash prizes.
The 2022 winners are: First Place- Jordan Spradlin. Second Place- Molly Magill. Third Place- Mackenzie Schools. Fourth Place- Ella Davis. Fifth Place- Graham Hills. Honorable Mentions go to Kenley Blackwell, Kayleigh Bryant, Kara Cersley, Owen Fisher, Annie Friday, Gabe Goff, Peyton Modlin, Kaleb Payne, Camden Pitts, and McKinley Tompkins.
