Field Trips

Historical Hanover Tavern offers several on and off-site educational programs for teachers and their students. In addition to our flagship Fourth Grade Standards of Learning-based Field Trips, Hanover Tavern can bring history to the classroom with our sixth grade Revolutionary War and Civil War presentations.

Sixth Grade Programs:

  • Hanover County During the Revolutionary War
  • Hanover County During the Civil War
  • Writing Competition based on the Civil War Margaret Wight Diary

Field Trip:

Our Virginia Standards of Learning-based 4th grade field trip program addresses history from the Colonial Period, the Revolutionary War and through the Civil War for school children in the entire central Virginia area.  Students experience a first-rate field trip without the cost of leaving central Virginia.

Further, rather than covering only one historical period, the children are exposed to the broad range of U.S. history topics that the Tavern site offers.  During the field trip, students move through numerous learning stations located at the historic Courthouse and Tavern, interacting with fascinating living history characters.  “Hanover Tavern:  History in the Heart of Virginia” is enjoyed by home-schooled, private, and public school children from all over central Virginia.

Due to COVID, there were no field trips in 2020-2022.  We created a free one-hour virtual field trip video for 4th grade teachers to use in the classroom.  There is a PowerPoint with questions and answers to use as a refresher/SOL test preparation after watching the video. The response to this new tool has been fabulous!
