The Tavern is owned and operated by Hanover Tavern Foundation, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. In 1990, the Foundation bought the Tavern and 3.5 acres from the Barksdale Theatre owners and, over a multi-year period, raised $5 million to stabilize and restore the aging building.
Restoration of the Tavern began in 1996. The initial project included repairs to the brick foundation; installation of a new brick ground-gutter drainage system, brick sidewalks, and a granite curb; restoration of the north porch; repair of the windows and weatherboard siding; and exterior painting. Interior restoration and rehabilitation work included adding accessible access to the building, plaster restoration and reconstruction, and carpentry repairs to the wood flooring, trim, and moldings.
Beginning in December 2003, a new heating and cooling system was installed, and the heart-of-pine floors refinished. A new main entrance was created at the rear of the building with an entrance lobby, theater lobby, and restroom wing. Work also began on the Bradley Theater, restoring the seats, installing new lighting, and constructing a new control booth with modern equipment. Performances in the theater resumed in January 2006, after a 10-year absence. The restaurant opened in July 2005.
Each year, we produce more than 40 events and programs, including tours, concerts, presentations, teas, pairings, themed dinners, paranormal investigations, and antique shows. The nationally recognized Virginia Repertory Theatre continues to offer riveting live performances. And, as always, Hanover Tavern Restaurant & Pub offers daily dining and accommodations for private events and receptions.
Hanover Tavern has been a vibrant center of community life at Hanover Courthouse for almost three hundred years. It remains a community centerpiece through the Foundation’s continuing efforts to preserve the building and share its past.
