“Hanover Tavern: History in the Heart of Virginia” is our Virginia Standards of Learning-based 4th grade field trip program addressing history during the Colonial Period, the Revolutionary War, and through the Civil War for school children in the central Virginia area. Over the past 13 years, more than 23,300 students have benefitted from the Tavern’s 4th grade programs.

During this engaging 3-hour visit, students move through numerous learning stations located at the historic Courthouse and Tavern, interacting with fascinating living history characters. The children meet George Washington, Patrick Henry, Patsy Henry, Mr. Chisholm, Martha Ann Fields, the Civil War Soldier, Margaret Wight, and George Washington Fields as they tour through the historic Tavern, see exhibits and artifacts, and, at the end, have time for lunch and photos with the presenters. The students will always remember this exciting experience.
Funding to provide field trips at Hanover Tavern is always a challenge. We depend on grants as well as the support of corporate sponsorships, fundraising events, and donations from people like you! Over the years, funding has provided free or reduced admission for more than 50% of our students. Providing financial support for under-funded schools helps disadvantaged students to meet state academic standards. In many cases, these schools would not be able to attend and thus not benefit from this educational program. Much time and expense go into this unique offering, and we need your support to ensure that we can continue to welcome students to the Tavern to learn Virginia history.
